Artist Interview: Rap Lyricist and Independent Label Owner J. Asadi!

Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with me! Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you do currently…

The name is J. Asadi, and Asadi means “Lion of God,” which was bestowed on me by one of my mentors and confidants. This to me was the beginning of a journey, or path to something greater, which I felt could be obtained through the power of music. This all came after serving in the United States Marine Corps which helped introduce me to a variety of different genres which would later be some of my inspirations. Having earned my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Grantham University, I took it upon myself to do something for self, so I created my own independent music label, Dark Mafia Entertainment, LLC, a veteran-owned and operated business where I gave myself the title of “President.”

What inspired you to start creating your own music?

What inspired me to create music? Great question, but my answer would have to be, “music just comes natural to me.” It has always been my saving grace, any dark moment or period in my life, music got me through. I am a very observant person so I would remember how I felt at certain times and just reflect, and that is where the “zone out” part comes into play. Get lost in your head and you be surprised what you come out with.

That’s the inspiration part, the freedom of creativity, the power to “Be.”

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

My biggest achievement has been making fans. You must remember, when I started, I was my only fan. I was the first one to believe in me and my music. So, when you have other people start believing and loving what you do, it means a lot and fuels the fire to keep delivering more music.

What do you have planned for this year?

My plan is to prepare for the release of new music. I have practically my second and third albums completed already. The plan was changed as Covid-19 came into the picture. My plan is to keep making music and prepare for 2021.

Who are the top 3 artists you’d love to work with? And why?

Too many people to choose from when viewing the question from an artistic standpoint.
First-person would have to be Jay-Z. I hear the stories of how he just goes in the booth and freestyles his verses. I am intrigued by that only because I have to write my emotions down and he is able to share his thoughts so easily. Next would have to be The Weeknd. His songs got a different vibe to them, they are innovative, and I work well with innovators. Which leads me to Adele. I feel she would be amazing to work with. Put her voice with my lyrics, it’s game over, nothing else needs to be said.

Take a moment to close your eyes. Where do ideally you see yourself in 5 year’s time?

I see myself as being happy. That is what we all chase, right? The pursuit of happiness is a real concept and that’s what I work so hard for. To just be happy.

Who or what is your greatest love?

My family and friends are my greatest loves. Can’t buy good people.

What book do you recommend most to others?

“The Laws of Human Nature” by Robert Greene. Learned a lot about myself and others. Always recommend people to read that to see what areas they can improve on.

If you could get the perfect help from an online tax return service, what would they do for you?

Hopefully, show you more ways for you to protect your money and get more of a return on your investments.

Can you give our readers 2 key tips for staying creative?

Number one is stay away from negative people, they will drain your energy and they do not truly have your best interests.

Number two is, “Write it anyways.” Who cares what it sounds like? You can always go back and fix it. Or use it later. Just keep it on deck.

Where is your happy place?

Haven’t found it yet.

If you were stuck on a desert island and could only bring 3 things what would they be?

Some company because you do not want to be stuck by yourself. A tent, and a tool that will allow me to create fire. Watched “Naked and Afraid” before so that’s immediately where those things come from.

How do you describe yourself in 5 words?

I’m hardworking, creative, risk-taker, loyal, and most importantly, dedicated.
