How To Set Up a Blog Site: Starting With Your Sitemap

There’s one interesting thing to notice: your readers don’t navigate your site the same way Google does.

In actuality, they read words printed on web-pages and enjoy images.

On the other hand, the search engine spiders search for codes to crawl.

In actuality, for better results, you need two distinct sorts of sitemaps: a sitemap page, exclusively for your visitors to navigate and a sitemap file in XML format, available for the search engines.

Generating a sitemap for the search engines is quite easy, especially if the site we’re talking about is a WordPress Blog. Here are two easy ways that you can create it.

Let’s see how to set up a blog site that will generate the best SEO success:

1) WordPress Set Up

WordPress, as an open source project, has got lots and lots of plugins and add-ons.

One of them is the Google XML Sitemaps Plugin, which updates the sitemap of your website every time you publish a new post.

And it does it every single time.

All you will need to do is download it, install it and activate it.

2) Other Sites Set Up

Another less automated way to do the job is creating your sitemap using free web-based tools, like XML-sitemaps.com.

Give it the URL of your website.

And it’ll create you the sitemap in XML and HTML format, both ready to use.

Once you’ve got your sitemap, you can upload it via FTP on the main directory of your website.

3) Browser sitemap

As I just said, the XML-sitemaps tool provides you with the map in HTML format also, so that you can modify it with an HTML editor.

Instead, if you are a newbie I strongly suggest you pick the first option above.

Alternatively, there’s a more complex way to do it.

But to do this you need detailed java language knowledge, or you can always outsource the conversion to a freelance coder.

4) More tips

Regarding the HTML map, take care to test it before uploading it.

The generator creates the map with the crawling instructions you give in your robot.txt file.

If you haven’t checked it you may reveal pages that you wouldn’t need to, like download pages for your paid products.

If you want to validate the XML before uploading to the search engines (useful if you’ve made any manual amendments), look at a Sitemap validator.

Using this you can where you can put in the URL of your sitemap and check it regularly as you learn how to set up a blog site.
