Tracking a missing refund check
Direct deposit, the electronic transfer of funds directly to your bank account, is the safest way to get your refund. You don’t have to worry about losing a paper check, losing it when you have it on hand, or being stolen. Please note that the IRS does not allow more than three direct deposits to the same bank account per fiscal year.
If for some reason you prefer a paper check, there is a process if you lose or lose it. You can ask the IRS to track it down by calling (800) 829-1954 or filling out Form 3911. (Note that married couples who filed a joint return must start with the form.) The IRS will determine if the check was funded. Otherwise, the agency will issue a replacement check. If you make money, the agency would create a claims package that includes a copy of the endorsed cash check. After reviewing the information (including the signature on the back of the cash check), the agency will decide whether or not to issue a replacement check.
