However, taxpayers who file a Form 1040-X in response to a notification received from the IRS must send it to the address on the notice.
  • If taxpayers have used other IRS forms or schedules to make changes, they must attach these schedules to their Form 1040-X.
  • Taxpayers must not modify a tax return to correct mathematical errors; The IRS will make mathematical corrections for taxpayers.
  • Taxpayers should also not amend if they have forgotten to take a required form or schedule. The IRS will post a request below the missing item.
  • Each individual modifying tax return for more than one year for each tax year will require 1040X separately. They must publish Form 1040-X each fiscal year in separate envelopes.
  • Taxpayers must wait for reimbursement of their original tax return before submitting an amended return. They can refund the refund check of the original statement before receiving any additional refund.
  • Taxpayers who file an amended return because they need more taxes must file a Form 1040-X and pay the tax as soon as possible. This will limit interest and fines.
  • In general, to claim a refund, taxpayers must file Form 1040-X within three years after the date they filed their original tax return on time or within two years after the date on which the person pay the tax, usually 15. April, whatever later.
  • Taxpayers can track the status of a revised statement three weeks after publication using “Where is my revised statement?” Processing may take up to 16 weeks.
