How to start:

Experimental or Learning On the Job?

While accounting is a business that can be started inexperienced, it certainly helps work a previous job related to money. Whether you have worked as a small-scale accountant or as a business controller, that experience will go a long way in recruiting clients for your own business. You don’t have experience? That is fine too! You can still embark on this professional career with few upfront costs. Check with your local community college for continuing education classes in accounting, or check courses available online.

Think Like a Business

Getting your business right from the start is important, especially when handling someone else’s money. You must register your business in your state, as a DBA (“Doing Business As”) or as a type of business entity such as a limited liability company. Although you can treat your accounting business as sole proprietors, defending yourself as an LLC can hold you personally liable if your business is sued. Filing as a business generally involves fees and varies from state to state. In most states, you can file $ 150 or less.

Your Own Protection

When setting up your business, you must take steps to protect yourself. Having a P.O. a box for any paper correspondence, so you can control who has access to your personal address. However, when selecting a Registered Agent for your state business, you are not allowed to include a PO Box. Since this is someone else’s private and confidential data as an accountant, you must also obtain insurance to protect yourself and your business in the event of errors or disasters.

Do the Marketing

At first, you don’t come to customers; You have to find them. Prepare some marketing materials. If you are excited about design, you can create these materials yourself. If not, there are plenty of templates for sale and freelance designers to help with an affordable price. Ask others in the industry which customers they consider important. Take a look at the marketing copy of accounting firms and see the stress they put on you. They have already investigated for you based on your business experience. If they emphasize something, you should too. Also, create a basic website. If your business model doesn’t largely exist online, keep your site simple and professional. Only include important information.

Then do some traditional marketing. Work your contact list, go door-to-door reaching small businesses and individuals, and attend community events. Start with people you know about your current job and get off.

When it comes to in-person marketing, you definitely need to print some business cards as soon as possible. Even if you’re not going to recruit customers door-to-door, having business cards made can help you every time you go to mixers or industry conventions. (You don’t have to do those things, but they can help you network and learn new things!) It can also be helpful to print brochures to go with local businesses.

If you’re only offering your accounting services virtually, you can use targeted ads effectively. Facebook has extremely accurate advertising services that allow you to target specific demographics and use your advertising budget efficiently. For free options, visit the online forums where your target customers spend time: reach out to them on Twitter or Instagram, or make guest posts on the blogs they frequent. If you love numbers, organization, and some financial work, accounting is the perfect business for you. Don’t quit your daily job. Start small, take care of your customers, do a great job, and very soon, you will be your boss if that is your goal.
