Finding grants specifically targeting African American women is challenging. A better way to search for seed funds is to look for funds for minorities and women. When looking for funds check the grant eligibility section to make sure the business meets the grant requirements.

 

Amber Grant Package

The Amber Grant was started to help women achieve their business dreams. Each month, one winner receives a $ 500 grant and at the end of the year. One of the twelve winners receives an additional $ 1,000. There is also an opportunity to get additional investor angels and mentors. The app requires only a small introduction to your business or idea.

 

Federal grant package

To find grants through the federal government.  A great place to start is on the website of its grant database Grant.gov. Searches are by category, agency and opportunity under the Recovery Act. Many of the business grants offered go to nonprofits who help businesses in their communities.  And to organizations and businesses that do business with the federal government as contractors.

Another place African American mother business owners should consider is the federal government’s Minority Business Development Agency, which has local offices across the country and can help business owners find local sources of grants.

 

State and local grants

In their search for local business grants, African American women can start with their state grant office. These offices list all federal, state, and local grant opportunities in the state for everything from housing and education to business. Business owners can find their state office through a link on the website of the US Economic Development Administration Many state and local grants go to companies that will provide jobs and promote economic growth for industries in that state.

New Voices Fund

The New Voices Fund provides capital and expert advice to women of color who want to start a business, grow their current business, or establish a community business. With over $ 100 million in the fund to be awarded, there is a reasonable chance that applicants with a sound business plan will be approved.

 

FedEx Small Business Grant Contest

FedEx does not discriminate and welcomes women of color with a unique small business to apply for a grant of up to $ 50,000. Each year, the company’s competition awards one winner with $ 50,000, one winner with $ 30,000, and eight winners with $ 15,000. Winners also receive money to use for FedEx Office printing and business services.
