Types of Loans: Direct loans are eligible for the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness, or PSLF.
Eligibility Requirements: In addition to having a qualified loan, you must make 120 qualified monthly payments while working full time with a qualified employer.  Identity employers are generally a tribal, local, state, or federal government (but not government contractors), or a nonprofit organization with a 501 (c) (3) state tax.

Apply: Forgiveness is not automatic. You will need to request the program. To begin the PSLF process, you must complete and submit an Employment Certificate, or ECF, form. The Department of Education will then confirm that your employment and loans qualify you for PSLF.

1. Voluntary

Some volunteer organizations offer student loan forgiveness in exchange for a certain amount of volunteer time. By volunteering at AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, or Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), you can get up to 70 percent of your student loans.
